BERYL KING Clay Sculpture
Beryl King's love of art goes back a long way, she started out as a painter and felt a strong creative urge at a young age. Life being what it is she did not get the opportunities early on to continue her studies in this area, she had to wait until her family were older. She also has a love of music and studied the piano, classical, from a young age. She also loved reading, and up to now has been interested in History, mythology and legends, of which she finds useful in her work.
Beryl found her love of working with Clay about twenty years ago when she moved to Phillip Island. She started working and reading everything she could get her hands on about pottery and sculpture. She finally went to TAFE for a visual arts diploma and really found her place. Although she did not study ceramics she found sculpture with proportions, balance, and techniques, so agreeable to her work in clay.
Each piece she makes is different and follows a theme on what is interesting to her at the time. She really tries to get emotion in her work, and to make the viewer feel something, either to laugh, cry or feel something. She considers herself lucky to have found galleries who like and sell her work. Far East Gippsland has been very good for her, the beautiful forests and mild climate create a restfull environment to work and study.
